Heidi Schröck took over her family’s winery in 1983; her ancestors have been making wine for more than three centuries. The winery is located in the historic village of Rust in the Burgenland province of Austria, about five miles from the Hungarian border. In 2003, Heidi was named “Falstaff Vinter of the Year”, one of only a handful of women so honored. She has been a champion of classic and obscure historic Austrian varieties. Today, her twin sons, Johannes and George, join her in the winery. Thus the name of the winery—Heidi Schröck & Sons (in German).
The website lyrically describes their situation: “Rust is our home & our place of power. Lively little town on Lake Neusiedl caressed by the wind in summertime, sleepy nest snuggled in the reed belt in winter. Spring & autumn are also, of course, picture-book pretty here. During these fleeting months full of abundant beauty, we are primarily focused on responsibility in our vineyards for handcraft & our ancient cellar constantly calls our attention & presence. But, hey, we live and work in Rust. What a pleasurable privilege!”
