Light gold-pink color; strawberry, raspberry on the nose; vivid strawberry, raspberry, peach, bread yeast on the palate.
Brut to almost off-dry; light and airy. Pinot noir (pinot nero) grapes spent more than six months on lees to add depth and complexity. This is made using the Martinotti-Charmat technique, often now is simply designated charmat. That means the wine and the bubbles happen in an autoclave (a large, pressurized vessel) to concentrate the bubbles as opposed to concentrating the CO2 in the bottle—the traditional method for Champagne. The techniques mean there is a clear difference between the two, but both deliver bubbles and delicious wine.
This spumante (“sparkling wine” in Italian) flirts with extra dry (12-17 g/l) but remains in the brut territory. Nice spot between some sweetness and dry. This will pleasure both palates. Light and refreshing with energetic bubbles; 12% ABV.
Canella was founded in 1947 by Luciano Canella. The winery is located in San Donà di Piave and run by Luciano’s children, Alessandra, Lorenzo, Nicoletta, and Monica along with Tommaso, the first of the third generation. The Canellas were one of the first families to set up a state-of-the-art winery specializing in Prosecco. Located near the heart of the Conegliano appellation, the Canella have almost become synonymous with Proscecco itself.
The winery notes the altitude of its vineyards—1,968 feet above sea level—allows grapes to ripen at a more gradual pace, resulting in more intense fragrance and greater acidity. A taste of Canella Rosé Spumante Brut will convince you they are doing something right.
